O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while in high school. She advanced into the top 100 rounds because the judges were thrilled with her performance. O'Neil received high praise from the judges. However, she was a major loser in both the top 10 Week as well as the Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were amazed by her performance and advised viewers to choose contestants who sang well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil was never in the bottom 3 again after numerous outstanding performances. O'Neil and her fellow contestants Rex Goudie and Werner gave two stunning performance in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that headlines would say O'Neil was able to defeat Goudie and become the 3rd Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and youngest winner in the history of the show. O'Neil's Canadian Idol victory was officially declared by the Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
